OH MY GOD. Oh my GOD. A new Street Fighter movie is happening, and it just found its director. And let me tell you, this is not what I expected.
So, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Kitao Sakurai, the guy who wrote, directed, and produced The Eric Andre Show, is stepping up to direct a live-action Street Fighter movie for Legendary Entertainment. Yes. You read that right. The dude responsible for some of the wildest, most unhinged comedy on TV is now in charge of adapting one of the most iconic fighting game franchises of all time.
I don’t know if I should be confused, terrified, or ridiculously excited. Maybe all three.
Before you panic, Capcom is “deeply involved” in this project. So at least we know the people who actually made Street Fighter are keeping an eye on it. Whether that means they’ll be helping or just watching from a safe distance while the chaos unfolds… who knows.
Oh, and the movie already has a release date – March 20, 2026. Mark your calendars. Or don’t. That date is probably gonna change at least twice.
Alright, let’s be real for a second. We all remember the 1994 Street Fighter movie with Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the absolute legend Raul Julia as M. Bison. Critics trashed it. Fans? We LOVED it. A masterpiece. Campy, ridiculous, over-the-top – everything a Street Fighter movie should be.
So, can this new one even come close? Honestly? With the Eric Andre Show guy directing, we might be looking at something even wilder than the ‘94 film. I don’t know how to process that information.
We don’t know who’s playing who yet, but let’s be honest – if this movie doesn’t have Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, and Bison, we riot. And if they don’t make Zangief say “Quick! Change the channel!” at least once? Wasted potential.
Originally, this film was supposed to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, the guys behind Talk to Me, but they peaced out last year. Now, with Sakurai taking over, it looks like Legendary might be leaning into a more absurd, over-the-top approach to Street Fighter. Honestly? That sounds kinda perfect.
2026 is shaping up to be INSANE. Kitao Sakurai directing Street Fighter is a plot twist none of us saw coming, but honestly? It might be exactly the kind of chaos this franchise needs.
I’m already imagining Blanka causing property damage, Zangief suplexing a tank, and Dhalsim stretching his way into absolute nightmare fuel.
Is it gonna be good? No idea. Is it gonna be entertaining? Oh, ABSOLUTELY
